The Attachment Manager classifies files that you download based on the file type and the file name extension. Windows Attachment Manager uses the IAttachmentExecute application programming interface API to find the file type, the file association, and to determine the most appropriate action to take. When you download files and save them on your disk, Windows adds specific metadata to these files.
These metadata are considered to be attachments. When Windows adds metadata to the download files as an attachment, this is known as Zone Information. Now, the Zone Information is where the root of the matter lies. When File Explorer opens a file, it reads the attached Zone information stored in the same location and checks to see if the file came from an unknown source or not.
If Windows finds that the file is unrecognized or came from unknown sources, it prevents you from opening it. Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk. If you wish to manually open a blocked file, right-click on the downloaded file and then select Properties. But, imagine you have to do this every time you download a file—that can be annoying and time-consuming.
I've now disabled that in my about:config for Firefox 3. I'll report back here if I do. I've been monitoring my avast processes, with all of the avast Shields disabled, and don't see any activity there during the download process itself. Even when enabled they weren't sucking off much processor time, but something was, and I thought it could be related.
That other something is my ZoneAlarm 6. It seemed to be worse if I'm running avast at the same time, which is why I turned avast off. But I can't seem to get away from it I tried putting the IP of the download website into my ZA trusted zone, but that didn't do anything.
I also tried turning off ZoneAlarm and substituted the windows firewall, but then the same thing happens with my System process. So maybe I just have an old, slowpoke XP system on a 7 year old computer Doesn't seem to work with FF4 and Avast! I'm afraid to reboot my computer for the same reason. When you rebooted, did it delete the files with a boot time scan?
Some files were deleted last night during a boot scan, I don't remember which ones, but mostly things were just put in the chest. Everything still seems to be running as far as windows 7 goes, but I haven't tried all my other programs.
I know it screwed up a 3D graphics program I that I use, but that was easy to fix, as it had a built-in way to do a repair.
I'm worried about my OS not booting though if I restart again. Quote from: Eddy on February 22, , PM. Member Posts: Quote from: jlwmtx on February 22, , PM.
Yes you can tell avast what to do if something is detected. You can view which Avast features currently block or allow a listed application by checking which icons appear in the Blocked for or Allowed for column:. The next time the removed application attempts to access your protected folders, webcam, sensitive documents, or passwords, you receive a notification asking you to block or allow the interaction.
